Umpire’s Mistake Gives Red Sox Victory over Tigers 7-4

Memorial Day- The weather couldn’t have been more perfect yesterday on Memorial Day for a day baseball game. The sox took advantage of a missed umpire call yesterday and had a 2 out rally to put them on top early in the game and never looked back. Mike Aviles was given a second opportunity after the home plate umpire ruled strike 3 a foul ball and that catcher Gerald Laird didn’t catch the ball. The call eventually had Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland ejected from the game. Replay clearly showed that Laird caught the ball and the umpire missed the call in the Sox’s favor. Felix Doubront had a solid outing only allowing 2 runs both on solo homeruns to Delmon Young and Gerald Laird. Scott Atchinson came in with 2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out 4 to improve his E.R. A to under 1.00. Alfredo Aceves came in to pitch the ninth and  made it interesting by retiring the 1st two batters that inning no problem, but then gave a double to Prince Fielder and then Johnny Peralta hit a 2 run- HR to make it a 7-4 game. Aceves then struck out the next guy on 3 pitches.

*Injury Note- Dustin Pedroia left the game with a jammed right thumb and is expected to miss tonight’s game.

Red Sox again improved to a .500 record and will face AL CY Young and AL MVP Justin Verlander tonight at 7:10pm nationally televised on ESPN. Red Sox send Daniel Bard to the mound to face the tough righty Verlander. Lester takes the mound tomorrow night vs. fellow lefty Smyly. Hopefully the Sox can improve over .500 again!
