Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower look to add some power to the Pats’ defensive front.
One the day that the nation had its eyes on Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, it was the surprise moves that the Pats made that caught the attention of New England football fans. The Pats first traded up from the 27th pick (yes, not down) to the 21 spot, giving the Cincinatti Bengals the pick along with a 3rd-round selection. They did this not once, but twice, nabbing defensive end Chandler Jones at 21 and linebacker Dont’a Hightower at 25 after trading the 31st pick and aa fourth-rounder to the Denver Broncos. According to WEEI.com, the 6-foot-5 Jones chose to leave Syracuse after this his junior season and was reveled for his size and speed by scouts during his career with the Orangemen. Hightower, meanwhile, has the look of a physical inside linebacker that has been NFL-ready for close to two seasons. Jones best plays at the defensive end position in a 4-3 scheme, while Hightower best plays at the linebacker position in a 3-4 alignment. Hightower’s physicality allows him to play as either a linebacker or small defensive lineman. Got to love that versatility, eh Belichick?
I don’t know much about these guys since I’m not an avid college football fan, but am certainly interested in seeing what contributions they have to make to the Pats. Hopefully, they will be able to stabilize the defense’s front seven. Now that some defensive front positions have been filled, expect the Pats to go for a cornerback/safety or maybe even possibly a wide receiver. Then again, the Pats could pull another whacky move and trade picks for a player, trade up, trade down; there’s a few different possibilities when it comes to this team and its unpredictable nature. We’ll just have to wait and see whot they pick next.
