NFL to Start Season With Replacement Refs

Published on August 14, 2012, by in NFL.

According to multiple sources including ESPN’s Adam Schefter the NFL and the referee’s union are making no progress on an agreement that would have the regular NFL refs officiating any games.  For right now it looks like we will have to settle for the college and high school officials that are officiating the games this preseason.  Many people have complained about these officials, but I am not one of them.  They tend to throw less penalty flags than the regular referees, which I enjoy greatly, and frankly, the regular officials blow just as many calls as the new ones.  It’s not like the “old” officials were any good, they would blow countless calls every game, and they throw the penalty flag way to often.  Every time a quarterback is on the ground out comes the yellow flag; oh a receiver gets hit, another 15 yard penalty, it is ridiculous.  The new  officials may be slow at spotting the ball, but at least they don’t throw the flag every play.  I’m actually glad the replacement officials are going to be around longer, they will get better with practice, and maybe there won’t be so many stupid penalty calls.  Right now it looks like the regular officials won’t be around until at least week three of the regular season, and while many are complaining about it I think that it may be a good thing from the fan’s perspective.
