Lately, Ortiz Owning Opposition

Published on June 21, 2012, by in MLB, Red Sox.

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz is currently tearing the cover off the ball, figuratively speaking of course.  With the way he’s been hitting the ball lately, however, I wouldn’t be incredibly surprised to see it happen. In his last six games, Big Papi has hit at a .450 clip with four homers, 11 RBIs, a .541 OBP (on-base percentage), and a 1.642 OPS (on-base plus slugging).  Every time he comes up to the plate, it seems as if he’s hitting the ball hard somewhere.  And Ortiz hasn’t simply been feasting on fastballs, either.  Breaking balls away have been taken to the opposite field, inside pitches have been driven down the line; the man can simply do no wrong at the plate right now.

Watching Papi hit the way he has the past few games has certainly been a treat.  It brings me back to the old days when he was one of the most feared hitters in the league, hitting balls out of the park with incredibly frequency.  While his power numbers don’t lead the majors, his 18 homers are good for fifth in the American League and his 49 RBIs sixth.  His .313 average is also impressive, good for sixth in the A.L.  What these numbers demonstrate is that Ortiz is doing it all offensively, hitting for both average and power while managing to drive guys in.  His balanced statistics are the reason that Jerry Remy remarked during the game last night that this is the best he’s seen Big Papi hit in his career.  I’m with you, Jerry, and being one of my favorite players I hope he keeps it up.
