Heat About to Burn Out

Published on June 7, 2012, by in Celtics, NBA.

At the center of the Heat’s struggles in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Celtics has been the coaching of Eric Spoelstra.  Numerous sports analysts have claimed that Doc Rivers has out coached Spoelstra in every game this series.

Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals could be the final game the Miami Heat Big Three play this season.  And it will be against their rival Boston Celtics, a team pulling out all the stops to beat Miami in 2012.  According to Heat head coach Eric Spoelstra, the key for Miami to win Game 6 has to do with rediscovering their identity.  ”We’ve shown some toughness and some character, and we’ll have to show it now on Thursday,” Spoelstra said.  ”That’s what this is all about, getting tested.  These are the moments where you can have breakthroughs.”.

It’s certainly surprising to hear Spoelstra so upbeat following three straight losses to Boston.  How else is he going to sound, though, his team down 3-2 in a best-of-seven series with their season on the line?  He is right, however: a solid performance by the Heat would tie the series and completely change the momentum in this series which is currently favoring the C’s.  Not even the return of Big Three member Chris Bosh could change the momentum in this series, so how is playing on the Celtics home court going to help motivate them?  The answer is simple: it’s a do-or-die for Miami.  If they lose, their season is over and another chance to win a championship will have slipped by the boards.
Head coach Eric Spoelstra’s job also would seem to be in question, two seasons having surpassed without winning one of the many championships Lebron James and Dwayne Wade guaranteed just two summers ago.  Is it possible that the Celtics are in Miami’s head?  It’s certainly possible.  The C’s are only focused on one thing according to Doc Rivers, however.  ”I don’t look at the other team much at all,” Rivers said.  ”I just like our guys.”. The fact that Rivers isn’t worried about Miami tells me (and should hint to you) that the Celtics are quite confident heading into tonight’s Game 6.  And if you don’t believe me, just watch the game later and observe the energy that Boston comes out with.   I definitely like the Celtics’ chances tonight.
