The ‘Hoo-Man’ is Back

The ‘Hoo-Man’ doesn’t often catch passes, but when he does, good things happen.

Well, at least the Patriots addressed one of their offseason needs.

Yesterday, the team officially announced the signing of tight end Michael Hoomanawanui to a two-year deal. Hoomanawanui is a player known more for his blocking ability than his pass catching skills, and while he isn’t a household name he gets the job done. The ‘Hoo-Man’ has spent the last two seasons in New England, providing a major boost to the run game as well as play action fakes. In 2013, he caught 12 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown in 13 games played. He’s no Gronk, but he’s certainly no slouch, either. The ‘Hoo-Man’ isn’t the fastest guy, but when given space he has the ability to get up the field and run over would-be tacklers using his size (6’4″, 265 lbs). It was smart of the Patriots to retain him, especially at 25 years young, and with Gronk proving to be as fragile as he has been over the course of his career, the team needs as much depth at the tight end position as they can get.
